Cold at the beach
Yes, beach sweats are a thing in LA
You’d think that living 1.7 miles from the beach means I spend most of my year wearing cutoffs and a bikini. Babe, no. With an average high of 71ºF, this Cold Soul is most often found on the shores of Manhattan Beach enrobed in beach sweats and a thick layer of SPF.
Aviator Nation sweats. I wish I could claim impermeability to the temptation of these absurdly overpriced hoodies and sweatpants. Alas, I succumbed to a 30% off sale a couple of years ago, and I’m now an absolute stan/ stereotypical Manhattan Beach mom/ local idiot. They’re absolutely worth the hype — you’ll understand as soon as you find yourself cozily bundled in their floppy warmth, sitting on a beach blanket, marine layer advancing, while all the swimsuit-clad dummies around you chatter to death. Beach sweats! Sorry and you’re welcome!
Cheaper alts/ other local favorites:
Jack’s Surfboards inhouse brand sweatsuits.
Rip Curl crewnecks.
Marine Layer Cloud 9 fleece — if you like them baggy, size up.
You can also find a ton of Aviator Nation stuff on eBay.
AYR Early Mornings tee. This long-sleeve t-shirt is the perfect coverup for both the Cold Soul and the UV averse. It’s thinner than a sweatshirt but thicker than a normal t-shirt, and the cut is flattering without being sexy/ pick-me. I wear the small and it’s long enough that I can get away with throwing it on sans bottoms without looking awkward.
✵ Warm wishes
Coming up in Always Cold: chilly children!
