May Gray
The Californians are hunkering down
Here in coastal Southern California we have entered our moodiest season, May Gray/ June Gloom. Because we’re wimps, you’ll spot hordes of us wearing sweats at the beach and ski jackets on neighborhood walks. Wish I was kidding! My Midwestern side is mortified.
✵ Three things for Cold Souls
1 - My new favorite hack is wearing sweats to the movies. Yes, you can ruin a perfectly good outfit this way, but you won’t care because you’ll be warm. Was I debuting a lovely tomato-red dress for a fun family outing on Saturday? Yes I was. Did I care that I looked insane coming out of the theater, after donning my smuggled layers? No I did not.

2 - Never once have I flown in an airplane and thought, “It’s a great temperature in here.” About 5% of the time, I’m too hot because I’m running late and just sprinted from the curb to Gate B1000. But usually, I’m trying to curl into a small enough shape that my sweatshirt fits over my entire body. Plus, if you travel in May, when the whole continental U.S. except Southern California is perfectly lovely, you look like an idiot for bringing your May Gray parka that you only needed on the plane ride and nowhere else on your trip. So I’m asking you Cold Souls: What do you wear to stay warm on planes if you’re traveling somewhere with great weather?
3 - With so many sales and promotions this week, here are a few sweaters/ sweatshirts I’ve got my eye on:
Alexa Chung for Madewell crocheted cardigan $298, $229
Tnuck v-neck polo sweater $198, $158
Marine Layer reversible sweatshirt $108, $85

Abercrombie & Fitch stitched edge hoodie $70, $54.99
Loeffler Randall Winslet jacket $350, $210

I bought a jcrew cashmere wrap a few years ago in a light spring green color and it’s perfection for traveling. I can wear it as a blanket or scarf or wrap but the light color and light weight makes it seem more like a fashion decision than a temperature one (yes, also always cold)
Wide-leg cotton pants, shoes with socks, and denim jacket during summer months. I don’t get freezing cold so denim is sufficient for me.
